Is Fumori a subscription?
No. Fumori is free to download and to start. Fumori Core is a one-time in-app purchase of US$19.99 in the US, with no recurring subscription.
Do I need to know any Japanese?
No. Start with kana from the beginning, or tell Fumori you already know hiragana, or both kana scripts, and begin from there.
Does it really work offline?
Yes. Lessons, dictionary lookups and scheduling run on your device. Buying or restoring Core needs a connection to Apple’s store, and speech for words outside the bundled vocabulary uses a Japanese voice installed on your iPhone, which may need downloading once.
Will my progress sync between devices?
No. Your study stays on the device you use. Export a backup to Files to keep a copy or move to a new device; purchases restore separately through Apple.
Is the audio recorded by native speakers?
No. Bundled kana and vocabulary audio is synthesised speech, with the normal and slow versions rendered separately. Other Reader words and sentences use your device’s Japanese voice. Treat it as a pronunciation aid rather than a pitch-accent reference.
Will it prepare me for the JLPT?
Fumori covers beginner Japanese, including kana, everyday vocabulary, core grammar and 300 common kanji. It isn’t a JLPT course and doesn’t promise complete coverage of any level.
What do I need?
An iPhone or iPad. Requires iOS 15 or later. Reading Japanese from screenshots requires iOS 16 or later.
